eXtension Horse experts have worked hard to develop credible, online certificate courses to educate horse owners and leaders about horse care, management and business practices. Each certificate course will have it’s own set of requirements for completion and certification. Many of the certificate courses listed below are FREE, unless otherwise noted.

Horse Adult Leader Training and Educational Resource

The Horse Adult Leader Training and Educational Resource (HALTER) Program is a progressive series of lessons is designed to offer equine science information, student activities, and techniques to foster positive youth development.

We encourage dialogue in the lesson with our Positive Youth Development Forum where you can ask questions, share ideas, and lessons learned with eXtension and others enrolled in the lesson.

Once you have successfully completed each level, and their associated requirements, you will receive a certificate of completion.

 

Horse Sense: Youth Equine Farm Safety Course

The “Horse Sense” – Equine Farm Safety Training course is designed for youth who currently handle work with horses or desire to be involved with horses in the future. The training program contains eleven short courses, which all include videos, links and activities, while providing important horse safety information. Students who complete each course will receive a certificate of completion.These courses are self-paced and chocked full of videos, activities and interactive learning opportunities. The courses are free of charge and open to anyone interested in working with horses.

 

Optimizing the Horse Industry Labor Force

This is a FREE online training program focusing on human resource, liability, and farm safety issues. Five online short courses developed for horse industry professionals are now offered for FREE with a focus on contract/employee labor law, liability issues, working with youth and volunteers, immigration documentation, and farm safety practices. Courses include:

  • Recorded webinars
  • Interactive quizzes
  • Decision making tools
  • Online resources

Webinar speakers include experts from the Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation at Iowa State University and an expert on equestrian safety from Michigan State University. Upon completion of each course participants will receive a certificate of completion. These courses are offered free of charge.
