Welcome to the Horse Adult Leader Training and Educational Resource (HALTER) Level One! This course is part of a four course series for adult volunteers working with youth in the horse industry or anyone that wants to learn more about equine science and how to use this knowledge in youth programs to foster positive youth development. These courses can be taken in any order, based on your background knowledge and areas of interest.

Once you have successfully completed the lesson, and their associated requirements, you will receive a certificate of completion. Learning Objectives

Objectives of this lesson includes:

  1. Identify and use safe techniques when handling horses and be able to explain those techniques to youth
  2. Interpret basic horse behaviors and apply that understanding to your interactions with horses
  3. Identify common issues with tack and equipment that may compromise safety of horses and riders
  4. Be aware of risks associated with working with youth and be aware of volunteer responsibilities when working with minors

HALTER Level One Requirements

A certificate of completion is awarded to learners who complete the following lesson sub-sections and achieve an 80% proficiency on each assessment/quiz.

  • Safety and Handling Working with Horses
  • Safe Tack and Attire
  • Basics of Horse Behavior
  • Staying Safe Working with Youth

This course is displayed using the online course tool known as Moodle. You will need to create an account and register with Moodle to view and participate in this and other equine courses offered by eXtension.
