Peggy Miller Auwerda

Peggy Miller Auwerda has worked at Iowa State University for over 20 years. Peggy obtained her BS in Animal Science from Illinois State University and her MS and PhD in Non-Ruminant Nutrition from the University of Illinois. At Iowa State University Peggy serves as the state Equine Extension Specialist as well as an adviser and teacher in Animal Science. Her statewide extension and outreach programs focus on youth and adults. For the youth program she helps manage and advise the state 4-H program including an annual horse jamboree. The adult extension program consists of conducting various programs. These include the Iowa Horse Judges Certification Clinic and the Master Equine Manager (MEM) program. The MEM program provides research-based information to the horse owner on horse care and management. The MEM Level 1 program consists of 24 hrs. of information on behavior, nutrition, pasture management, facilities, selection, diseases and parasites and hoof care. Peggy currently instructs Exercise Physiology of Animals and Equine Systems Management. She is adviser for the Equestrian Club as well as works with students to manage the Block and Bridle horse show. Peggy works in the industry managing a small boarding stable and her favorite horse activity is trail riding.
